RAMSEY 1940S WEEKEND from the 22nd – 23rd August 2009 from 10am ‘til 5pm at RAF Upwood. Every year for one weekend in August, Ramsey takes a trip back in time as it returns to the 1940s to remember the sights and sounds of this historic era. 2009 will be no different and on  the 22nd and 23rd of August, Ramsey will celebrate all things Forties. The highlight of this trip down memory lane is Saturday's 1940s dance, held in one of RAF Upwood's old aircraft hangars from 7.30pm ‘til 12.00 midnight. There you can dance the night away to an authentic big band sound.  The daytime will see a procession of vintage vehicles, living history displays, stalls, Forties fashion shows and other special events. Meanwhile, in the town, the shops will put on a 1940s window display. But the weekend is not all about fun and remembering the past, at the heart of the event is a serious aim - to raise money for a variety of charities and all profits from the weekend are donated to charity. Since the event's start in 2003 a host of charities have benefited from the weekend – from national cancer charities to Ramsey's pensioner and youth groups. The event – which commences at 7.30pm (until 11pm) - will include original soundtracks of events that took place during those WW2 years and dancing to nostalgic music for swing plus old tyme favourites such as the valeta, St Bernard Waltz, military two step, cha cha cha, barn dance, cokey cokey, charlston etc as well as some popular ballroom numbers - foxtrots, waltzes, quicksteps etc. DJ Lynne will seek to accommodate personal music requests of the era and the evening will include some community singing of WW2 songs and reflections of those “good old days”, concluding by tradition now with Land of Hope & Glory plus Vera Lynne’s famous song We’ll Meet Again! There will be a “village hall bar” and a good buffet is provided. Early advanced booking is strongly recommended (popularity has demanded that the event now is held over two nights!).
